|

Kol Oud Tof

Habib Koite

|

Lo Còr de la Plana (法國)

|

systematic re-creation of the
popular Occitan patrimony — that
is, the songs, sayings, proverbs

Sam Karpienia
(France)
|
|
|

|
From Kanjar'oc to Gacha Empega and Dupain, Sam Karpienia has
transformed the Marseilles music scene, revitalizing it with a
poetic intensity and offering a unique voice. His unforgettable
sound, a gem polished by the elemental forces that pervade the
Mediterranean, reflects the intoxicating exhilaration of
rebetiko, or Greek urban folk music, as much as the feverishness
of flamenco and, of course, the joyous insolence of the new
Provençale music of which he is a mainstay. |

Project SOUTH
Project South is actually two musical collaborations: one based
in the Southern Taiwan village of Budai. The other is in Taipei,
featuring the participating musicians from this year's Migration
Music Festival.
The Budai collaboration brings together local Beiguan music
troupe Qing Hexuan with pipa player Chung Yufeng, guitarist Ken
Othake of Japan and Finnish folk musician Pekko Kappi. These
artists have spent the past month living together in Budai to
write new compositions inspired by the people and surroundings
of this Southern Taiwan village.
The second project is collaboration among MMF's participating
musicians, who all hail from a geographical "south." Whether
they come from Africa, Mediterranean France, the Philippines, or
Kaohsiung County, these musicians will share their musical
traditions with each other on stage, as well as the joy of
improvising and creating new music together.
