A New Turn for MMF

The city is a place of exchange and change, and in Taipei, the Migration Music Festival has supported this ideal by showcasing music that transcends borders. Music is also endeavor of exchange and change, and MMF also seeks to encourage meaningful interaction among artists and audiences.

This year MMF itself must change and move in a new direction. On a practical level, we have faced several difficulties. Poor weather in recent years has forced the cancellation of MMF's outdoor events, which has prompted us this year to "migrate" to an indoor location, Zhongshan Hall. In addition, MMF is feeling the impact of global changes: rising oil prices and the resulting increased costs present us with little choice but to charge admission and ticketing fees.

However, with these changes, MMF also has the opportunity to offer a different kind of programme ”X one that retains the spirit of our past events, yet opens the doors to new possibilities. We believe that audiences will enjoy the intimate setting of historical Zhongshan Hall, and are confident that this year's music programme will resonate with music lovers. We thank you for your continued support, and look forward to seeing you at Zhongshan Hall.

MMF 08: City Borders
9/27~10/12

City cultures contain layers upon layers of overlapping histories, spanning thousands of years. These compacted histories and cultures create a dimension that gives each of today's cities a unique character. Yet within a city, borders emerge, often marked by language and culture. Borders serve to control: they may block exchanges between different peoples and cultures. Borders also can displace: the languages and cultures of an exiled people can either thrive or languish within a border. Borders are even found in the heart and mind, living stubbornly. This year MMF features artists that have crossed a border to create new music. These performers include immigrants in living in a foreign city, musicians that often perform outside their own country, and artists from multicultural backgrounds.
