瑪莉亞,卡拉妮葉米(Maria Kalaniemi)是當今世上最知名、最重要的手風琴樂手之一。她出身於芬蘭「西貝流士音樂學院」的民謠音樂系,從1970年代末期開始,便積極投入芬蘭民謠音樂的復興與再造運動,目前則是該系資深教師。
除了勤於創作與演出外,更投身於芬蘭民謠的傳承工作。她與多位芬蘭女性民謠工作者不斷地合作女性創作及音樂計劃,其中最具代表性的是80年代的「我們女人」(Me
Naiset)專輯。她們以民歌傳唱的形式,回到女性以芬蘭箏(Kantele)吟唱詩謠及說故事的傳統,使得芬蘭新民謠運動發展出「女歌」的支脈,成為當今芬蘭樂壇的重要音樂圖像。
卡拉妮葉米的音樂跳脫芬蘭手風琴音樂鄉野俚俗的舞曲─以波卡(polka)、華爾茲(waltz)為主的樂風,向芬蘭史詩《卡雷瓦拉》(Kalevala)與傳統音樂如牧歌(runo)、芬蘭吉普賽音樂借火,卻不自囿於舊有曲調的形式與語法;大膽揉合傳統歌謠和個人原創音樂,卻不譁眾取寵。卡拉妮葉米的演奏技巧細膩流暢,以婉約深刻的樂思與氣質,音樂中強烈的女性特質,卻不只是溫柔的軟語呢喃,而有一種大器的優雅,在一片陽剛之氣的手風琴樂壇中顯得特別典雅出眾。
十多年來,卡拉妮葉米的創作與演出在芬蘭備受肯定,包括1996年成為芬蘭第一位獲得「芬蘭獎」的民謠樂人、連續多年獲「芬蘭國家藝術基金會」補助,2005年更獲選為「國家藝術教授」。近年,卡拉妮葉米積極延展其音樂版圖,從北歐諸國、英倫三島、歐洲大陸、美加地區到日本、中國,從爵士、古典、流行、實驗到當代音樂,都有她越界合作的蹤跡。
卡拉妮葉米首次應邀來台演出,將透過單人獨奏、獨唱的形式,讓身體成為另一個風箱──也是手風琴的靈魂之所在,超脫旋律,揭露使手風琴具有生命力、琴音流洩不止的秘密,帶領聽眾進入即興冥想的幽祕之境。
One of the most respected and
highly acclaimed contemporary accordionists in Finland, Maria Kalaniemi
is known for exploring and pushing musical boundaries as an accomplished
technical player and gifted composer.
She received eleven years of training in classical music on the
accordion, and then moved on to gain a thorough knowledge of Finnish
folk traditions at the Folk Music Department of the Silbelius Academy
in Helsinki. It was during this time that Kalaniemi started to develop
an experimental flair and a more adventurous attitude towards all
forms of music; she also began incorporating left-hand free bass
melodies into her folk compositions – a technique once considered
exclusive to the domain of classical music.
While rooted in traditional Finnish music forms, Kalaniemi’s music
evokes a wide range of sounds and influences, including Swedish
folk, polka, tango, opera, and jazz. These sounds are found throughout
her extensive catalog and numerous musical collaborations. Past
performance highlights for Kalaniemi include sold-out shows in New
York and Chicago and an appearance with the BBC Concert Orchestra
at Queen Elizabeth Hall with her group JPP.
