Hakka
music master Xu Mu-zhen is considered a national treasure
in Taiwan, who continues to impress audiences today with his
virtuosity in various styles of Hakka music, particularly Mountain
Songs and Eight-Tone music. Xu is equally at home performing
other traditional Chinese music styles, including Qi-zi-diao
(the Seven-Word Song) of Taiwanese Opera. In addition to his
robust voice, Xu’s performances also showcase his talents as
a multi-instrumentalist – he plays a wide range of instruments
associated with traditional Chinese music, including the gong,
bang-zi (wood clappers), the sanhsin, the yueqin (“moo-shape
lute”), and bamboo flutes.
