The
2006 Migration Music Festival presents "Crossings"
¡V a special event where musicians of different countries,
cultures, and traditions meet and perform together.
Now
in its fifth year, the Migration Music Festival continues
to celebrate the music created by travelers, wanderers,
migrants, and immigrants ¡V those who have left home or
are continually on the move. The musicians featured at
MMF come from diverse places, cultures and backgrounds,
but they share this in common: while their music or art
is often rooted in tradition, many of them have become
¡§uprooted¡¨ for one reason or another ¡V be it love,
politics, a yearning for new artistic routes, or simply
a desire to go to new places.
These
d Áracin Á musicians and artists have found themselves
living in many places ¡V a Mediterranean island rich in
history, a bustling city in Asia, the quiet countryside,
a construction site. And, no matter where they live or
where they come from, these people share common experiences
that inspire their music: memories of hard labor, a longing
for home, a celebration of the earth, the gentle whisper
of a loved one.
This
year¡¦s festival features partnerships and encounters
of musicians from different cultures, backgrounds and
traditions. Ross Daly of the UK showcases his vast knowledge
of various musical traditions with Greece native Kelly
Thoma; Madras Special brings together virtuoso musicians
from India, Hungary, and Germany; Takashi Hirayasu and
Ken Ohtake share the sounds of Okinawa with Lin Sheng-xiang¡¦s
Hakka-based folk music; Ramesh Shotham and Chung Yu-feng
forge new musical paths in an experimental fusing of sounds
from Indian and Chinese instruments; Taiwan¡¦s Betel Nut
Brothers and David Chen from the USA bring together their
blues-based sounds; and Hakka musician Xu Mu-zhen adds
distinctive color to Lo Sirong¡¦s musical stories.
Taiwan
is realizing the significance of immigrants in its society,
as both its culture and music begin to show the influences
of different ethnic groups. With the growing problems
facing migrants, new immigrants, and refugees around the
world, the Migration Music Festival hopes to promote respect
for different ethnic groups and celebrate their uniqueness
through this concert program. By having musicians from
other countries share the stage with local musicians,
the festival hopes to encourage respect and tolerance
on the island, which will carry over to all peoples and
cultures of the world. It is also hoped that this musical
program will open the window for the audience to a new
international perspective.
