GRAND STAGE

Lin Sheng-xiang

Lin Sheng-xiang is one of the most prominent folk musicians in Taiwan today. As a founding member of the groundbreaking Labor Exchange Band, Sheng-xiang fused social activism, folk-rock sensibility and the traditional music of his Hakka roots to widespread acclaim. His performance at MMF ’06 features songs from his latest album, “Planting Trees”, which continues his on-going collaborations with poet/lyricist Chung Yong-feng, Okinawan musician Takashi Hirayasu and guitarist Ken Ohtake of Japan.

Takashi Hirayasu

Okinawan native Takashi Hirayasu performs traditional Okinawan music on the sanhsin, a three-stringed banjo-like instrument with a snakeskin head. Hirayasu started his musical career
playing blues, R&B and rock in bars and clubs at American bases on the island, but turned to traditional Okinawan shima-uta (island music) in his early twenties. As part of the band Champloose in the 1970s, Hirayasu helped pioneer the blending of traditional Okinawan sounds with rock and roll, and played a major role as guitarist and arranger on the album Bloodline, which featured Ry Cooder. Hirayasu’s recent albums are highly acclaimed collaborations with the American guitarist/musicologist Bob Brozman.

Ken Ohtake

Ken Ohtake of Japan first appeared at the Migration Music Festival with Takashi Hirasyu in 2003. He is based in Tokyo, where he performs and teaches guitar. Besides the performance with Sheng-xiand and Takashi on Grand Stage, Ken will present a music workshop to share his personal musical experience of working with musicians from strong cultural roots.
